On the Scent of Better Nose Health
The nose and sinuses play crucial roles in the respiratory system and have several important functions.
Filters out dust, allergens, pollutants, and other harmful particles from the air, preventing them from entering the lungs.
Noses contain olfactory receptors that enable us to perceive and distinguish different smells.
Nasal passages are lined with specialized immune cells and antibodies that help in protecting the body from invading pathogens.
The nose and sinuses produce mucus, which helps in keeping the nasal passages moist.
Maxillary and frontal sinuses, assist in equalizing the air pressure between the inside and outside of the nasal passages.
Here are some conditions that can often be treated with medication or nose surgery:
It refers to the inflammation of the nasal passages. Symptoms may include nasal congestion, sneezing, itching, and a runny nose.
Sinusitis (or Chronic Rhinosinusitis) is the inflammation or infection of the sinuses, which are air-filled cavities around the nose. Symptoms may include facial pain or pressure, nasal congestion, headache, thick nasal discharge, and reduced sense of smell. Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery may be required if necessary.
Nasal polyps are soft, noncancerous growths that develop in the nasal passages or sinuses. They can cause nasal congestion, a runny nose, facial pain or pressure, and reduce sense of smell. Treatment for nasal polyps can include steroid nasal sprays, allergy management, and nose surgery such as polypectomy.
Deviated Septum occurs when this wall is crooked or shifted to one side, leading to nasal obstruction, difficulty breathing, and recurrent sinus infections.
It refers to a blockage or difficulty in airflow through the nose. It can be caused by conditions such as a deviated septu, nasal polyps & enlarged turbinates. Nasal obstruction may require treatments like nasal steroids, allergy control, or nose surgery procedures such as septoplasty or turbinate reduction.
